How to use the PDF to Image

  1. Drop a PDF onto the upload area, or click it to pick a file. The tool opens it, then shows the page count and a preview of each page.
  2. Choose JPG or PNG, then pick a resolution: Standard 1x, Good 1.5x, High 2x or Max 3x. For JPG, set the quality with the slider.
  3. Decide which pages to convert: all pages, the pages you tick in the preview grid, or a page range such as 1-3,5,7-8.
  4. Press Convert. A progress bar shows each page as it is drawn, and Cancel stops the job at any point, keeping the pages already finished.
  5. Download single pages with their Download buttons, or take everything at once with Download all as ZIP. Use Reset to clear the file and start again.

How PDF pages become images

A PDF page is a set of drawing instructions measured in points, where one point is 1/72 of an inch. To make an image, your browser draws the page onto a canvas of a chosen pixel size and saves that canvas as a JPG or PNG file. The resolution presets are simply multiples of 72 pixels per inch: 1x is 72 DPI, 1.5x is 108 DPI, 2x is 144 DPI and 3x is 216 DPI.

Pages are drawn one at a time, and each canvas is released as soon as its image has been saved, so even long documents do not pile up in memory. To keep a very large page from crashing the tab, the tool lowers the scale when the result would be wider or taller than 8,192 pixels, or larger than 16,777,216 pixels in total (4,096 × 4,096). You will see a note whenever that happens.

Everything happens on your device. The PDF is read and drawn by your browser, and the images are created locally. Qwikora does not upload the PDF or the images.

image width = floor(page width in points × scale)
image height = floor(page height in points × scale)
DPI = 72 × scale
limits: longest side ≤ 8,192 px, width × height ≤ 16,777,216 px

Assumptions and limits

  • The output is a flat picture of each page. Text in the image cannot be selected or searched, and links and form fields stop working.
  • Password-protected PDFs are not supported. The tool does not decrypt files.
  • Files are limited to 100 MB, a warning appears above 100 pages, and only the first 300 pages of a longer PDF can be converted.
  • Very large pages are drawn at a reduced scale to stay within 8,192 pixels per side and 16,777,216 pixels in total.
  • The pixel size shown under Resolution is calculated from page 1. Pages of a different size produce different pixel dimensions.
  • Pages are drawn by the PDF.js engine, so unusual features or fonts can look slightly different from how Acrobat or your usual viewer shows them.
  • Converted images stay in your browser's memory until you reset or leave the page, so converting very many pages at a high resolution can be slow on phones and older devices.

Practical examples

A US Letter page at Good 1.5x

A Letter page is 612 × 792 points. At 1.5x it becomes 918 × 1188 pixels, which is about 108 DPI. Choosing 3x instead gives 1836 × 2376 pixels.

An A4 page at High 2x

A4 is about 595.28 × 841.89 points. At 2x the tool draws it at 1190 × 1683 pixels (144 DPI); fractions of a pixel are rounded down.

Converting pages 1-3,5,7-8 of report.pdf

That range selects six pages: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8. As JPG they are named report-page-001.jpg, report-page-002.jpg, report-page-003.jpg, report-page-005.jpg, report-page-007.jpg and report-page-008.jpg, in the ZIP and when downloaded one by one.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser opens the PDF, draws each page and creates the images on your device. The file is not sent anywhere, and closing or resetting the tool releases the images from memory.

Should I choose JPG or PNG?

JPG gives smaller files and works well for photos and scanned pages; lower the quality slider to shrink it further. PNG is lossless, so it keeps text and line art crisp, but the files are usually larger. Both are drawn on a white background.

What do Standard, Good, High and Max mean?

They are 1x, 1.5x, 2x and 3x multiples of a PDF's natural 72 pixels per inch, so about 72, 108, 144 and 216 DPI. Higher settings give larger, sharper images and bigger files. Use High for most screen use and Max when you need to zoom in or print.

Why does it say my PDF is password protected?

The file needs a password to open, and this tool does not decrypt PDFs. If you are allowed to open it, remove the password in a PDF viewer, save a copy, and then load that copy here.

Is there a limit on file size or pages?

Files can be up to 100 MB. You get a warning above 100 pages, and only the first 300 pages of a longer PDF can be converted. If you need the rest, split the PDF into smaller parts first.

Why are some of my pages smaller than I expected?

A page larger than 8,192 pixels on a side, or 16,777,216 pixels in total, is drawn at a lower scale so your browser does not run out of memory. The results list shows the real pixel size of every image.
